Welcome to the home page of the Research Group on Optimization

The group research activities are oriented towards the mathematical treatment of real life optimization problems coming from different fields of application: industry, public transportation, finance, etc. Our work is concentrated on two main mathematical areas: infinite dimensional optimization and combinatorial optimization.

The problems treated within the first area of interest involve the numerical solution and optimal control of processes modeled by partial differential equations and variational inequalities. Fields of particular interest are the numerical simulation and control of fluid flow, steel cooling systems and medical oriented electro-magnetic fields.

In the second area of interest we deal with the analysis and efficient solution of complex combinatorial optimization problems. Practical problems of interest are online optimization problems, network flows and public transportation systems.

I Latin-american Workshop on Optimization and Control

The first Latinamerican Workshop on Optimization and Control will take place in Quito, Ecuador, from the 7 to the 9 of July 2008. The event will host leading latinamerican researchers in the areas of optimization and control. Invited talks from outstanding international scientists and contributing presentations will be held. One aim of the workshop is to present latinamerican scientific contributions to these areas of knowledge and enhance the scientific collaboration among the participants. The workshop will be organized by the Ecuadorian Mathematical Society, the Escuela Politécnica Nacional and the Universidad Nacional de Rosario, with the partial support of the International Mathematical Union (IMU) . For more information on the event, please vissit www.math.epn.edu.ec/workshop .
